Oklahoma City-based Sonic Corp., the nation鈥 largest chain of drive-in restaurants, doubled its per-share profits in the second quarter, and topped analysts鈥?earnings estimates for the three-month period ending Feb. 28. The company鈥 net income increased to $7.7 million or 14 cents per share, compared with net income of $4.1 million or 7 cents per diluted share in the same period last year. Same-store sales rose 11.5 percent and margins improved in the quarter, the company said. Shares of Sonic closed Tuesday at $36.66, after earlier setting a new 52-week high of $36.73. CEO Cliff Hudson attributed the strong quarter to company initiatives and an improving economic environment. 鈥e are particularly pleased that traffic drove two-thirds of our same-store sales increase,鈥? Hudson said in a statement. 鈥his increase is primarily a result of growth in our core menu items and product innovation, complemented by our national media strategy. As we move into the second half of fiscal 2015 we expect our business momentum to continue. In addition, we expect technology initiatives to provide an additional layer of growth to build sales and profits over the next several years.鈥?Since 2012, Sonic has bought back nearly $242 million of stock representing 23 percent of its outstanding shares. 鈥e will continue to focus on our multilayered growth strategy, which incorporates same-store sales growth, leverage from higher sales, deployment of free cash flow, increasing royalty revenues and new drive-in development, to build shareholder value. We believe all of these initiatives will enable us to continue to achieve double-digit earnings per share growth for the next several years,鈥?Hudson said.
